2024 Scholarships Award Ceremony

On October 22nd, 2024, Safe Bulkers Scholarships Award Ceremony for the 2024-2025 academic year took place at the company’s headquarters in Limassol.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the NYSE listed company, Safe Bulkers, Inc. and its CEO, Polys V. Hajioannou, have granted scholarships to Cypriot or Greek students settled in Cyprus who wish to pursue a professional career in the maritime industry.

A total of ten (10) scholarships of 10,000 Euros each were awarded this year to undergraduate and postgraduate students, four (4) of which to young women, based on academic merit and social criteria, for studies at some of the most prestigious Universities abroad, in courses that are relevant to the maritime industry’s needs. In particular, eight scholarships were awarded for undergraduate studies at the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Cambridge, the Newcastle University, the Eindhoven University of Technology, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), while two scholarships were awarded for postgraduate studies at the University of Southampton and the Technical University of Munich.

The event was honored by the presence of the Shipping Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Ms. Marina Hadjimanolis, the representative of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth and First Officer of Education of the Limassol District Office, Mrs. Zoe Polydorou, the Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Yiannis Armeftis and the Principal of Mitsis Commercial School – Lemithou, Mr. Athanasios Athanasiou.

Speaking at the event, the CEO of Safe Bulkers, Inc., Mr. Polys V. Hajioannou, said:

These young people are the future of Cyprus shipping, and we are next to them. We strive towards encouraging and empowering young people to consider a rewarding maritime related career, by developing and nurturing maritime culture among the young generation and informing young people about the nature and benefits of maritime professions. We are dedicated to develop the next generation of maritime professionals in Cyprus, by developing a larger pool of highly qualified young talents which is both a strategic priority and a competitive advantage to further attract international shipping business to Cyprus and expand the country’s maritime cluster.”
